Travel to Broaden Your Vistas

Travel is fantastic. Travel is educational, Travel is fun and rewarding beyond words. Sometimes when you travel you find a place that lights your fire! Thailand and Cambodia are one of those places! Thailand and Cambodia strike me with the truly beautiful scenery, lovely and friendly people, captivating history and culture, breathtaking architecture and of course the yummy food. Thailand & Cambodia may be my favorite photo trips EVER!

When traveling with our camera the goal is to bring back the story of the place. To capture with your lens and share with you the tastes and smells and feelings of the location to share with family, friends, co-workers and the internet.  How do we do that? Explore with a great guide and get in deep with the place. Get off the “tourist trail” safely and find the locals only spots.

Walking the streets of Bangkok I carried Nikon Z8 with 24-120mm f 4 (Canon and Sony’s 24-105mm f 4 fits the same bill) over my shoulder with a Peak Sling strap. It was easy to navigate the busy streets and markets and be surreptitious. I love to shoot with the swing-out LCD screen from the hip so I don’t attract attention. At night and indoors the f 4 aperture is fast enough with the Z8’s high-ISO capability to tell the stories I see, even under very subdued light. Paintings and statues, color and lights, tuk-tuks and markets local people all come into focus.

Visiting the elephant sanctuary of Chaing Mai is a truly sublime experience! Spending a morning with these gentle giants, feeding and washing them is for many a dream come true! How do you capture the perfect picture? Get in close, not too close, but close! Fill the frame as you and your friends are bathing an elephant. How cool is that!  Be sure to choose a fast shutter speed to stop the action and freeze the motion.

The temples of Chang Rai and Chang Mai are beyond belief. Golden statues, colorful paintings and soaring ceilings make superb pictures.  How do you capture the beauty and scale? Add a wide-angle lens (14-30mm f 4 or equivalent) to your kit.  Envision a stunning foreground element, get close, tip the lens up and include the interior details and you’ve created in pictures that heavenly motif.

A visit to Seim Reip and Ankor City in Cambodia is phenomenal. Seeing and photographing the Imperial City carved from the jungle is mind blowing. Whether it’s the famous Ankor Wat at sunrise or the quiet majesty of Ankor Tom, the soaring architecture is a natural for our lenses. I added a 70-180mm f 2.8 compact telephoto lens (or 70-200mm f 4) to compress the distances and capture the details in the ancient city. Venturing into the Tomb Raider Temple of Ta Phrom is truly taking a step back in time. How do I make a picture that captures the temple with a tree growing out of it?  Isolate, focus and vary the angle makes the award-winning composition.
