Protecting Your Photos & Gear

Protecting and safe-guarding your camera kit, pictures, negatives, and slides is important! In the camera store everyday we see cameras, lenses, and photos that are damaged in storage. Mold, fungus and heat are the culprits! Mold and fungus “eats” the lens cement & coatings and the emulsion on your photos. High temperatures warps and fades photos and the operation of your gear.

Where do you store your gear and photos?

A cool dry place is recommended.

A top shelf in a closet on the south or west side of the house is best. Look for a spot where clothing smells good and paper doesn’t yellow over time. That’s where I store my photo albums, negatives, slides and camera bag.

Avoid a closet where leather goods (shoes & belts) are mold-stained or that has the “musty” smell.  Under the bed is also a bad idea.

Avoid a closet where a water leak (next to or under a bathroom) may destroy everything.

Avoid the garage or outdoor shed that bakes in the heat.

A little effort, searching around your home will yield a safe spot to store your camera gear and memories. Be sure to check from time to time that your cool-dry place is still cool and dry!
