Exposure. Working with RAW files. Getting it right. Tonal range vs clipping

In the first class we will talk about shooting in the RAW mode vs JPG and why RAW is so much better. We will briefly go over how to "develop" the RAW image in Camera RAW before making the print, as well as some of the features of Lightroom and Aperture – the two primary RAW workflow programs.

Composition. Full frame in camera. Rule of thirds. Cropping

The composition tells the story! There are two aspects of photography that separate real photographers from wannabes and can not be fully automated by the cameras' computers: timing and composition. We will talk about composition – why the rule of thirds, how to use the full frame of the camera for cropping and composition. How to use a wide-angle lens to tell the whole story through the use of subject elements and their placement within the frame.

Printing, Color Calibrating and Profiles. Paper choices. Pigment vs dye-based inks

It IS possible for your inkjet printer to closely match what you see on your computer scree – providing you have a decent monitor and calibrate it properly. We will talk about ICC profiles and how to make them. We will discuss various paper stocks and proper ink matching.

The Joy of Layers. Adjustment layers. Montages.

Advanced Photoshop techniques can greatly improve or enhance your images without changing what is in the original image (or not). Adjustment Layers and layer masks are actually quite easy to use, once you understand the basic concept. We will go over how to improve your images without touching the data in the original RAW file. We will look at how we can combine images seamlessly using layer masks.

Getting it Right. Pro retouching secrets. Healing Brush vs Clone stamp

Once we have mastered composition, exposure, RAW processing, layer masks and know how to choose the right paper and ink and profiles, there are still a few more tricks to making our perfect photo: There are all kinds of retouching secrets we will go over, from the healing brush and clone stamp to effective use of layer masks to soften a portrait, make eyes and teeth whiter, and remove unwanted objects from our images.
